LIGHTS AND DRAMA
LIGHTS AND DRAMA
Is there domestic violence in marriage?
Can a man rape his wife?
What is the limit of sexual relationship between a man and a woman who are joined in hold matrimony?
I am not married so am just wondering, and am thinking what fate will meet me when am married.
Let's even assume you do not wish me well, what about your Sisters, daughter's and friends. They will get married. Will you be able to protect them? Will the society help you protect them? Will the law help you?
This is not some fiction, but I will like for you to believe it is_ it will help you endure what is to come. I will indulge you greatly by using native names, you must have noticed I love to flaunt my cultural heritage.
The next morning Ama-ette looked up at her husband on the dinning table beaming with Joy, the previous night she had been laid on the "altar of consumation" the bed-sheets had turned out red like expected. She was serving her first meal concocted with love, and the entire family was present.
Life seems really wonderful, she had a great "bed-matics" to look forward to after a long day of cooking and pleasing in-laws. Naturally the evidence of her bed-room escapades were obvious, the morning sickness and the strange cravings soon passed and she was due to be delivered of a bundle of joy.
Few weeks to her due-date she noticed something really strange, her brother-in-law was unusually nice to her, though her senior he was always there to help her with anything she wanted. He was the only available person when her "water broke" and he took her to the hospital, where she delivered a baby boy.
Every one had come to celebrate with her on this Joyous occasion. You know people choose not to keep their mouths shut even when it is none of their business. Unexpectedly, a well-wisher lost it, obviously her mouth was itchy and she had too much food.
"Ama-ette why does your baby look so much like your brother-in-law?
Someone tried to hush her! But she kept talking
"Ama-ette I was saying, the parents of the child are both dark and short but their offspring is rather fair and looks like one that will grow quite tall, look at his fingers".
"Mma-ette you talk too much let it be" Ama-ette said laughing it off as a joke.
Days turned into months and months into years, Ama-ette's son had grown and everyone could not help but notice the striking resemblance between the boy and his uncle, sometimes comments were passed but for some reasons Ama-ette did not seem to bother.
When Uko, Ama-ette's son turned seven she was expecting her second child she due in a few weeks.Something really strange happened during one of her "bed-matic" sessions with her husband, the Doctor had said it was safe to at least engage in some foreplay.
"Turn on the light" Ama-ette muttered to her husband kissing him on the ear. He tried to argue and Ama-ette let it be, she had tricks up her sleeves. Why should the lights be off? That was the question her friends had asked her earlier in the day. They had mocked her for being so "old school"_ so today she decided to become "new school".She faked a coughing fit and rushed into the bathroom locating the light switch with her eyes, after few seconds in the bathroom she came out placing her hand on the switch and the lights came on.
Ama-ette did not realise a single halogen bulb could light her path and reveal the darkness she had been surrounded with for years. On her bed laid the reflection of her Son! It was her brother-in-law. Ama-ette did not lose her mind she went into labour. Hours after she had gone into labour the Doctors were struggling to save her life.
"Madam push please"
The nurses kept begging but Ama-ette's mind was gone she was numb, the baby was eventually born but it was a still-birth. She went home after a few days with her husband.
Mrs Mkpa, Ama-ette's mother-in-law sat at the door step expecting her to return, on approaching she threw a bucket of water on Ama-ette. Before one could say Jack she had taken on a Mike Tyson role, switching almost every second to play, Mohammed Ali and Klitschko. Thanks to divine intervention, Ama-ette was rescued.
Later that night she said her last words;
"Ebe-ndo, who is the father of our son Uko"? She asked her husband.
"Answer me"! She screamed at her husband.
"Did you know it has been your brother all this while, was it him on our wedding night"?
She fell before her husband crying and begging to know the truth. He responded by dragging her out of the room into the sitting room where the Pharisees had gathered against her. Despite her constitutional and fundamental human rights ,her Judgement was read to her without having heard her side of the story.
Her mother-in-law started
"Murderer you have killed my grand-son".
She tried to speak in her defence but she was hushed,
"Shut up little devil", Mrs Mkpa said.
A cup filled with water was brought to Ama-ette ,she was asked to drink it, the water was not clear and it was stinking. Ama-ette asked what sort of water it was and she told it was the water used in bathing her dead child and she had to drink it to prove her innocence.
Without arguing she drank the water in the cup, not because she wanted to but because she was uneducated, she knew the society will not take her side, she knew her mother would ask her to go back and endure, marriages were to be endured. Even I sharing her story has not been able to help her. She is my flesh and blood.
*******************************************
Let me ask you something, what have you done to ensure your sister, your daughter is not a victim of domestic violence?
Your story may not be barbaric like that of my relative; what will you do to protect the female folks around you.
